Subject
Material on Manchurian Khamnigan Evenki. Castrenianumin toimitteita 40. 1991. 120 p. (ISBN 951-9403-43-4) 9 €.
Description
The Khamnigan are a tiny ethnic group of mixed origins in the border region of Siberia, Mongolia, and Manchuria. While the principal idiom spoken by this group is Khamnigan Mongol, a little known and exceptionally archaic Mongolic language, parts of the population are bilingual in Northern Tungusic dialects covered by the general term Khamnigan Evenki.
The present booklet offers an integrated synopsis of two separate dialectal varieties of Khamnigan Evenki, as spoken by the Khamnigan in Manchuria. The material was gathered by the author during two field trips to northern Inner Mongolia, China, in 1990 and 1991. Since very little previous material has been available on Khamnigan Evenki, it is hoped that the information published now will provide a basis for a better understanding of the complicated linguistic and ethnohistorical circumstances in the ancient Transbaikalian contact zone of Mongolic and Tungusic.
